On his initial day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reimagine” New York City, promising “a fresh chapter” and an audacious commencement to his tenure.

A Groundbreaking Figure

The 34-year-old democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A time such as this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the public whose hold the levers of change,” Mamdani remarked.

Ignoring suggestions to temper hopes, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will rule expansively and audaciously.”

Governing with Democratic Socialist Convictions

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his political ideology. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not forsake my principles for concern of being called extreme,” he said to an enthusiastic response.

The swearing-in was a two-part event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's rise as a victory over powerful interests.

A Costly Platform

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a platform including:

• Subsidized daycare
• No-cost bus transit
• A halt to rent increases for approximately 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion expense of these initiatives may prove difficult to fund. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the richest residents and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing Political Headwinds

The new mayor also faces concern from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a appointments director stepped down over controversial past social media posts.

Mamdani has sought to smooth over these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was described as surprisingly friendly.

The Fundamental Tests of Leadership

In the end, New York mayors are judged on their success in providing essential functions: sanitation, reducing the rat infestation, fixing potholes, and ensuring reliable subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's public safety record, pointing to record low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his address with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
