The Cadillac F1 team Utilizes NASA Playbook to Assemble Unit from Nothing for Australian Grand Prix.

A little more than one year ago at the Nevada Grand Prix, the Cadillac racing team were ultimately given the green light as the world of Formula One's newest entrant for 2026. Building the squad from nothing has required a hectic pace of work that the team principal, Graeme Lowdon, has compared to the Apollo moon landing. As F1 descends on Vegas this race weekend, the team are aware time is getting tight.

The Tight Timeline to Australia

At the last event of the campaign to be hosted in the America, with around three months to go before they hit the circuit for the inaugural time in Australia at the first race of 2026, Cadillac have advanced rapidly but, in what must seem like a sisyphean endeavor, they are aware there will never be sufficient time.

The chief technical officer, Nick Chester, became part of the nascent project in early 2023 not long after it was created, when the organization were without even an official entry. He has been at its core ever since and has a wry smile when thinking about the experience.

“You can have five minutes thinking back at what you’ve done and say: ‘Incredible, what an achievement what the team has created in less than three years,’” Chester states. “And then the very next instant you consider: ‘Yes, we’ve still got a great deal to do.’”

An Unprecedented Task

Nick Chester enjoyed success at the Renault team in Alonso's championship-winning seasons of 2005 and 2006 and was in command of technical development at the new Mercedes-Benz Formula E team, but no other project has quite compared with the task of launching the quintessentially American Cadillac marque, a manufacturer-backed entry sponsored by the owner, GM, into Formula One.

“Establishing an Formula One team from scratch, when will you ever have the possibility to do that?” Chester remarks. “It's unparalleled. In an established team you won't have the chance to alter team culture.”

With each passing day that elapses focus are more focused on the impending moment of truth in Australia and goals are being handled.

“You have to assume that any new team entering the sport is probably going to finish last but just making it to the starting line will be an feat in itself,” the team principal commented earlier this year and while Chester shared this view he believed the squad had a statement to make as well.
“The first thing we aim to demonstrate is that we belong on the grid,” he emphasizes. “In order that we show up and we perform competently. We want to show that we are a serious contender executing the right things on the circuit. Once we have demonstrated that we are a legitimate team, then we will focus on improvement from there on.”

Racing Talent and Recruitment Effort

In the summer they contracted Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas as their pilots for the 2026 season, a duo notable for their priceless expertise in competing at the leading positions in two of the sport’s biggest teams, Red Bull Racing and Mercedes-AMG, and Valtteri Bottas expressed the sentiment of combative optimism.

“Of course, we’re realistic,” Bottas stated. “We face a massive task to do, and we expect probably a difficult start, because this is Formula One. But our goal isn't to remain at the rear. I believe with this structure, with this team, this staff, it's entirely possible we won't be able to advance swiftly to the front and enjoy some success.”

To achieve that goal hiring has been in top gear, with employees now at more than 400 and scheduled to hit the goal of 600 members rapidly. In addition to their present headquarters at the UK base, the organization are in the midst of finishing an HQ at Fishers in the Indianapolis area and there is the GM works in Charlotte, where they are building the facility to build the power unit, set for the 2029 season – in the meantime they will use Ferrari engines – and the Toyota's wind tunnel in Cologne, Germany. It is a intricate structure, contrary to the trend in Formula One for increased consolidation, and has inspired the fresh organizational mindset to which Chester referred to.

Apollo Inspiration

“We've drawn heavily from the NASA moon mission,” remarked Lowdon ahead of the British Grand Prix in mid-season. “We’re realistic, we understand how difficult it is. The schedules, they’re super, super, super short. Alright, it's not a space expedition, but the pressure is comparable.”

So they have embraced, as opposed to the usual hierarchical system, a decentralized management similar to that of the space agency's, where there were a variety of specialist groups all working on distinct elements of the project across a multiple sites.

“When you must follow a procedure where a challenge emerges and they raise it up to their team leader, that supervisor talks to a manager at a different location, it is relayed back, it becomes inefficient,” notes the CTO. “So we empower people to take charge. Moving away from management approval for all decisions is so much cleaner and quicker.”

The Future

The efficacy of this nimble strategy will be evaluated in the intensity of Grand Prix in 2026 and there is a significant degree at stake for the sport, too. The Cadillac team have recruited as their development driver the young American Colton Herta
