Nepal's Political Landscape Sees Significant Alliance Formed By Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable move ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the younger generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which led to significant loss of life.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.

The late summer revolt was sparked by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent allegations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the Fresh Political Partnership

According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the country's older political class. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Broader Political Discussions Underway

In a related event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with a number of major political leaders. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a shared duty. The message reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
