Micky van de Ven scored twice as Spurs prolonged their unbeaten run on the road in the Premier League and handed Everton their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left their historic home behind after 133 years at the end of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman struck on two occasions from set-pieces in the first half to place their strong form at jeopardy, and they were unable to mount a comeback before the midfielder - assisted by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - nodded in a final goal to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien believed he had levelled the scores a short while after Van de Ven's opener, directing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, missed a handful of opportunities, while Vicario made a succession of fine stops to ensure the London club went five away games unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the VAR stepped in, instructing the match official to review the goal on the screen and the official decided that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates the manager's side into third place in the Premier League, five points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and sit six points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils duties at each end of the field

After a drab midweek performance in the Champions League against the French side, where they managed a only attempts on goal, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The summer signing was failed to influence the game before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the field, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the end.

Centre-back Van de Ven converted into an attacking force to be feared.

Spurs' opening strike came from a well-worked corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball back across the six-yard box for an unmarked the defender to head home.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - added his next goal in added time as he rose above the England keeper to nod in.

Van de Ven was just as outstanding in defensive duties, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the pair dealt excellently with the 34 crosses thrown their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Everton missing striker's instinct

Everton's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it appears the freshness may have faded slightly and fans headed to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Tottenham.

The break in the team's winning streak at home won't be a major concern for David Moyes, but their striker situation are.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of recognised centre-forwards - had netted only a single goal combined before the weekend's outing.

And they were failed to add to that poor record on a damp and dreary night on Merseyside.

The striker's performance was epitomized when he chose to bicycle-kick a clear chance from near the goal, even with having space and time to readjust for a simpler attempt that would have challenged the keeper.

Barry, as well, was unable to influence the game after coming on for the starter in the second half.

It wasn't for a shortage of chance. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through the winger and Ndiaye, who tirelessly delivered dangerous crosses into the Spurs box.

The Toffees: The team travel to the Stadium of Light in the top flight on early November at 8 PM.

Tottenham: The London club go to St James' Park on late October for their fourth-round League Cup match against the Magpies.
