The National Football League has levied a hefty $250,000 fine on Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for an action he describes as an “unintentional” obscene gesture directed at attendees during a recent game at MetLife Stadium.

Widely circulated footage seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture toward opposing supporters, but Jones maintains he was actually signaling approval to Dallas supporters in attendance as his team secured a decisive win.

“It was unfortunate. It was essentially an interaction with our fans out in front of us,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “There was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, Cowboys fans. The entire stadium was filled with excitement for the Dallas team.”

He further clarified that the signal was completely unintentional, happening amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I just put up the wrong digit,” he remarked. “The action was inadvertently done. This is sincere. Should you call it accidental, you can. But it got resolved pretty quick.”

League Precedent for Proprietor Fines

This incident isn’t the first time an NFL owner has been fined for misconduct. Previous cases include:

• Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at fans in January 2024.
• Former Tennessee Titans proprietor Adams received a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a similar obscene gesture.

Jones, a figure who is known for his media savvy, reportedly has an approximate net worth of $16 billion, so the fine manageable for the billionaire owner.

Offseason Issues and Media Attention

This event comes after a contentious offseason for Jones, who encountered significant backlash from the Dallas supporters after the team traded key defensive player Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.

Additionally, Jones was a central subject in a Netflix documentary that examined his role in building the Cowboys into the world’s most valuable sports franchise, despite its modern-era championship drought.
