Cancellieri Displays Glimpses of Genius in Silver Lining for Unstable Lazio

The feeling at the Stadio Olimpico was anything but joyful during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a side that had conceded a total of 10 goals while netting just two in their most recent five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were concluding their ongoing dissent in a continuous dispute with chairman Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Unraveling?

Had their campaign coming unstitched, or had there never been a binding element maintaining its structure to start with? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as manager during the off-season, but then he publicly stated that the club had not mentioned the transfer ban they were facing for financial irregularities. Speculation that he might quit were unfounded, but he did say that Lotito had "swindled" him.

The Roman club became as messy during matches as off the field, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the remaining initial five matches, which included the capital clash. Throughout this period, it has been hard to ascertain if they're getting better or self-destructing.

Cancellieri's Surprising Presence

One individual remained positive throughout. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to remain with Lazio this season. He completed the previous campaign with Parma on loan and, during the summer break, his owning club were pushing for him to remain there temporarily. The transfer ban led to a change of plans. The club couldn't risk to reduce their roster without replacements.

He signed in the first place under Sarri's first spell, then a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 Serie A appearances with the club in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those from the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed at the end of that season, would later accuse Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential only to bench him consistently."

Finding His Best Role

Maybe Sarri was persistently working to identify the exact type of the player's talent. Billed as a flank player when he joined, Cancellieri yet was deployed for most of that campaign as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile as center forward. During 63 outings on loan at Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
